Face to Face Marketing, a Beginner's Guide

We have found that one of the biggest worries companies who have never held a promotional event will have is not knowing what to do or expect, doubt will set in and the easy option emerges, “put an ad in the paper” or “let’s do a radio campaign and wait for the phone to ring”.

“Where do I start?” “Can I do it?” “Will it work?” These questions are common and we will help you to answer them. YES it will work, but only if you do it correctly. Over 90% of our business at Access Point Promotions is repeat business; customers who use promotions as a main tool of their marketing mix.

Where do I start?

Start by picking the phone up to Access Point, we are a friendly bunch and will answer your questions with candour. We are not here to take your money and run, we want you to succeed because we want to still be dealing with you in five years time.

Tell us about your product, your ideal audience and what your offer is going to be. If you are working to a budget then let us know as the price for venues varies dramatically dependant on footfall and the time of year.

Access Point staff will provide you with demographics, footfall (most retailers regard footfall as a secret so a lot of retail outlets will be graded a,b,c or d) site location and opening times.

You will be asked to fill in an Application to Trade which will give an insight into your business. You will also be asked to provide evidence of any information you wish to hand out at stores when carrying out face to face marketing i.e. leaflets, promotional items.

Can I do it?

The first thing you need is a display stand. Access Point do not supply display stands or staffing for promotions and/or exhibitions but there are numerous companies who supply display stands with full graphics for a reasonable price (if necessary we can point you in the direction of some suitable suppliers).

An ideal size of display is roughly 6ft x 4ft footprint; this size would enable you to place it in most of the venues we offer in the UK. Larger display stands can be accommodated but the number of venues is restricted.

The most important link in profitable promotions is the quality of staff on your display stand. There are some obvious points:

  • Smart, well presented in business attire.
  • Know the products/ services well.
  • A trained promotions person will bring you more business than any display stand – invest in them and it will pay dividends for you.
  • Match the product to the environment, it wouldn’t be a great move to target a product aimed at 18-24 year olds in a garden centre!

Will it work for me?

The strength of the offer linked with eye-catching display and the friendly personnel, mixed with site location and demographics of the retail environment is the formula to success for face to face marketing; it is as simple as that.
